Chess Club with Pat LaVone

Whether you’ve never played chess and want to learn the basics or if you’ve played some and want to improve your skills, this is the place to be. Research shows that kids who play chess often see increases in scholastic performance especially in math and reading. Best of all, kids love it! Students will learn: value of pieces, the difference between check, check mate; and stalemate; basic checkmate patterns, opening principles and general strategic concepts. There will be instruction given, but also open play time where kids can try out their own strategies. Chess sets will be provided. Pat has been teaching chess for about 24 years, was voted SCA chess coach of the year and led Eden Prairie High School to State Championship.
